Peripheral Circumferential Chorioretinal Atrophy in a Patient with Alagille Syndrome
نویسنده
چکیده
The patient was a 15-year-old girl with an established diagnosis of Alagille syndrome (AS) since early life. Her medical history was significant for systemic manifestations of AS including liver transplantation and pulmonary artery balloon dilation. She had an unusual triangular facies characterized by a broad overhanging forehead, deep set, hyperteloric eyes and small pointed chin. Her bestcorrected visual acuity was 1.0 in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination was positive for posterior embryotoxon in both eyes. Funduscopy revealed diffuse choroidal hypopigmentation with increased visibility of the choroidal vessels and symmetric, well-circumscribed macular discoloration (Figure 1). A circumferential chorioretinal atrophy was also detected in the peripheral retina (Figure 1). Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging clearly defined hypofluorescent areas in the peripapillary regions that extended along the macula and had a sleep mask appearance (Figure 2). Peripheral circumferential chorioretinal atrophy was also clearly detected (Figure 2). AS is clinically defined by neonatal cholestatic jaundice with intrahepatic bile duct hypoplasia. Ocular findings included posterior embryotoxon, iris abnormalities, optic disc anomalies, and fundus changes [1]. We found very few cases in the literature presenting as AS and chorioretinal atrophy with a sleep mask appearance when examined by FAF imaging [2,3]. Recently, peripheral circumferential chorioretinal atrophy was detected by wide-field FAF imaging [3]. To our knowledge, this is the second documentation of peripheral chorioretinal atrophy evaluated by wide-field FAF imaging. We speculate that chorioretinal atrophy with a sleep mask appearance and peripheral circumferential chorioretinal atrophy may be characteristic findings for AS. We also emphasize that FAF imaging is useful in visualizing chorioretinal changes in patients with AS.

Optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence imaging study of chorioretinal atrophy involving the macula in Alagille syndrome
We report the first case in the literature of chorioretinal atrophy involving the macula in an 11-year-old girl with Alagille syndrome, as examined by optical coherence tomography, and fundus autofluorescence imaging. Funduscopy revealed diffuse choroidal hypopigmentation with increased visibility of the choroidal vessels and symmetric, well circumscribed macular discoloration. Anomalous obliqu...

The aim of this study is to investigate fundus autofluorescence (FAF) as well as fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (IA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in a patient with pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy (PPCRA). A funduscopic examination revealed chorioretinal atrophy along the paravenous area in both eyes. A marked bone spicule pigment clumping toget...

We encountered a 9-year-old Japanese girl with Alagille syndrome. Her scintigraphic examinations of the liver were performed at the ages of 16 months and 9 years. 99mTc-PMT, a hepatobiliary imaging agent, was distributed homogeneously in the liver at the younger age, but unevenly produced an area of focally increased uptake in the medial segment of the liver surrounded by peripheral atrophy at ...

BACKGROUND Gyrate atrophy of the retina and choroid is a rare autosomal recessive inherited disease, characterized by progressive chorioretinal atrophy that results in progressive deterioration of peripheral and night vision and leading to blindness. CASE PRESENTATION This report presents a case of a 28-year-old man consulting for a progressive fall of visual acuity with hemeralopia. Eye fund...

This report describes an atypical case of pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy, associated with focal progressive peripheral retinal microangiopathy, in a 51-year-old black female. The eyes were asymmetrically involved. Although several cases have been reported with typical features of this uncommon entity, none of them have been known to be associated with retinal microangiopathy. The oc...
